This student housing project of some 412 cluster flat rooms and studios is located on the northern boundary to the Queen Mary College Campus in Mile End London. The site is currently occupied by a disused railway viaduct originally constructed as sand and coal drops serving the commercial wharfs along the Regents Canal bordering the site to the east. To the south of the site is Pooley House, an award winning block of student accommodation and to the north of the railway viaduct – Meath Gardens an area of public open space. The student apartments are planned in two four storey podium blocks separated by a central urban square. Eight storey towers bookend the podium blocks with the most westerly tower rising to 10 floors. The proposal responds to each of the site’s differing contexts – the College Campus to the south, the Regents Canal Conservation Area to the East, Public housing to the west and the elevated railway with Meath Gardens beyond to the north. Within the podium blocks, most cluster flats and studios are planned with a southerly aspect over the College access road. The apartments within the towers are planned around central circulation cores most with east/west orientation taking advantage of views over Mile End Park, Meath Gardens and more distant views of the City to the west.
